The ammannia gracilis or Large Cognac Plant ( Ammannia gracilis ), and (Delicate) Cognac plant (also written as Kognakpflanze ), is a marsh plant from the family of Lythraceae (Lythraceae). It comes from the tropical West African region of Senegambia ( Senegal , Gambia and Guinea ) and grows there on sandy river banks and in floodplains. It is named after the cognac brown color that it develops as an aquarium plant in good light conditions.

description

The large cognac plant grows as an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 35 cm. The rarely upright, mostly prostrate, curved, fleshy and bald stem can be up to 60 centimeters long and has thin, curved branches. The simple leaves sit opposite to each other on the stems. Emerse plants develop light olive green leaves with a linear to obovate leaf blade that is 2 to 6 centimeters long. Submersed plants develop leaves (orange on the top, purple-orange underneath) with a lanceolate leaf blade that is 7 to 12 centimeters long.

Aquaristics

In the aquarium hobby , the delicate cognac plant (like the small cognac plant, Ammannia senegalensis ) is a popular aquarium plant. In particular in Dutch plant aquariums these plants are used to create plant roads. In order to thrive, the plants need temperatures above 23 ° C, soft water and very good lighting.

Taxonomy

The first description of Ammannia gracilis was made in 1833 by Jean Baptiste Antoine Guillemin and George Samuel Perrottet in Florae Senegambiae Tentamen , 1, p 301. A synonym is Ammannia diffuse Hiern, non Willdenow . The genus was named after the botanist P. Ammann (1634-1691).
