As Cola Wars ( . Engl Cola Wars ), the competition between the cola - brand Coca-Cola ( Coke ) and Pepsi-Cola ( Pepsi ) called for market leadership.

Development of the Cola War

The term was coined by the use of comparative advertising from the 1970s. Both groups tried to achieve the sole distribution of their product through exclusive contracts with pubs, supermarket chains or snack bars and operated cutthroat competition .

During the Cola War, Pepsi changed the color of its cans from blue, white and red to blue and in 1996 had a Concorde painted blue as part of the “Blue Project” .

In the computer game Pepsi Invaders , which was developed for Coca-Cola, the player has to shoot down the attacking Pepsi spaceships.

Both cola companies influence American politics . The Democrats are traditionally supported by Coca-Cola and the Republicans by Pepsi: Richard Nixon was a long-time lawyer for Pepsi, he drank Pepsi-Cola publicly in Moscow in 1959 during a dispute with Khrushchev . Jimmy Carter later helped open the Chinese market for Coca-Cola.

Despite the competition among each other, fair manners exist: In 2006 Coca-Cola employees tried to sell secret information about new products to competitor Pepsi. Pepsi informed the Coca-Cola Group about the offer, whereupon it could take legal action against the relevant employees.
