Coldfoot is a place on the Dalton Highway in Alaska . It was founded in its current form by Dick Mackey, a former Iditarod winner . Mackey was selling fast food here from a converted school bus. With the help of the truck drivers who commuted on the highway between Fairbanks and Prudhoe Bay , today's service station with gas station, restaurant and accommodation was built.
Coldfoot was originally a mining settlement called Slate Creek . The place got its current name from gold prospectors who got cold feet in the Koyukuk River around 1900 and turned around . In 1902, Coldfoot consisted of two rest houses, two shops, seven saloons and an arcade. A post office was in operation from 1902 to 1912 and reopened in 1984.
Coldfoot Airport is located west of the Dalton Highway and has a 1,220 meter runway.
