The Coldwater River is a river in south-central British Columbia , Canada . It is the longest tributary of the Nicola River , into which it flows on the western edge of the city of Merritt . Its traditional indigenous name is Ntstlatko ("cold water").

course

The Cold Water River arises in the Northern cascaded chain west of the Coquihalla pass at 49 ° 37 '34 "  N , 121 ° 8' 52"  W . Its source rivers originate from the Zupjok Peak and other high mountains such as Llama Peak , Alpaca Peak , Vicuña Peak and Guanaco Peak . It generally flows northward over about 95 km, before in Merritt in the Nicola River at 50 ° 6 '53 "  N , 120 ° 48' 15"  W flows. The main tributaries are Midday Creek, Voght Creek, Brook Creek, and Juliet Creek.

The river passes under British Columbia Highway 5 ( Coquihalla Highway ) on the Kingvale Interchange. The Coquihalla Highway and oil and gas pipelines run through most of the Coldwater Valley. A stretch of the Canadian Pacific Railway runs along the northern part of the river.

The river flows through two Nlaka'pamux Indian Reserves belonging to the Coldwater Indian Band : Coldwater Indian Reserve 1 and Paul's Basin Indian Reserve 2 .

Hydrology

The river drains an area of ​​917 km². The mean discharge at the mouth is 7.74 m³ / s. The river usually carries the largest amounts of water during the spring floods in May and June.

nature

The river crosses two biogeoclimatic zones of British Columbia in its course . In its upper course it passes the zone of the common Douglas fir (var. Glauca ) . When it enters the lower Coldwater Valley, the drier yellow pine / tussock zone is reached.

Fish species

Several species of Pacific salmon (including silver salmon and king salmon ) and steelhead trout are found in the Coldwater River. Other species are bull trout , which Coregoninenart Prosopium william soni ( English Rocky Mountain whitefish ) that the white fish counting Rhinichthys cataractae ( English longnose dace ) and Rhinichthys falcatus ( English Leopard dace ), Richardsonius balteatus ( English Redside shiner ) that Redhorse Catostomus columbianus ( english Bridgelip sucker ) and Catostomus Catostomus ( english Longnose sucker ), the bullhead Cottus cognatus ( english Slimy sculpin ) and Cottus asper ( english Prickly sculpin ), the lamprey Entosphenus tridentatus ( english Pacific lamprey ) and rainbow trout .
