The Coleman River is a river in the north of the Australian state of Queensland , in the Far North Queensland region on the Cape York Peninsula .
geography
River course
The river arises at The Lagoons , about 220 kilometers northwest of Cooktown and southeast of Lapunya Mount from the Little Coleman River and the Big Coleman River . The place is west of the Peninsula Developmental Road . The Coleman River initially flows south and turns west after approximately 40 kilometers. It crosses the entire Cape York Peninsula and flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria at Chillagoe Pocket , halfway between the coastal towns of Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw . The Lightning Creek is a northern arm of the river and branches off west of Strathmay . It also flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria at Promuraaw.
