history

Colenso was founded in 1855 on a strategically important ford of the Tugela. The place was named after John William Colenso , who was the first Anglican bishop of the Natal Diocese at the time of its founding . Colenso was on the connection between Durban and Pretoria , at that time the capital of the South African Republic . In 1879 the ford was replaced by the Bulwer Bridge , which has been preserved to this day. In 1886 the Durban – Ladysmith railway was built with a bridge crossing the Tugela at Colenso. The route was later extended towards Johannesburg .

In 1899 the Battle of Colenso took place west of the village as part of the Second Boer War , in which British units were defeated against the Boer troops. In 1922 a coal-fired power station was built, which was in operation until 1985 and with its three cooling towers still shapes the silhouette of the city. Colenso received parish status in 1958.

In 2018, twelve taxi drivers were shot dead in an attack on a minibus between Colenso and Weenen.

Economy and Transport

Colenso is on the R74 trunk road , which connects Colenso with Harrismith in the northwest and KwaDukuza on the Indian Ocean , and the R103, which leads north from Colenso to Ladysmith. The N3 runs south past Colenso.
