The church of S. Maria dell'Elemosina on the Via Etnea in Catania , called Collegiata , is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Late Baroque Cities of Val di Noto .

On the site of a temple of Proserpine , a chapel is said to have been built in the first centuries of Christianity, which was dedicated to Our Lady of Alms . King Martin I raised this to the regia cappella in 1396, giving it the same rank as the Cappella Palatina in Palermo . With the approval of Pope Eugen IV , a collegiate foundation was incorporated in 1446 . Hence the name Collegiata (collegiate church).

After Catania was destroyed in 1693 by the earthquake in Val di Noto (administrative unit in south-east Sicily), the church was rebuilt. The design is attributed to the Jesuit Angelo Italia (1628–1701), the execution to Antonio Amato. The richly furnished church has the plan of a Latin cross . The three-storey façade made of ivory-colored lime and olive-colored sandstone (1768), facing the Via Etnea and concave in the middle, is a major work by the Polish architect Stefano Ittar (1724–1790), who trained in Rome and was married to a Catanian . The dome fresco is by Giuseppe Sciuti (1835–1911). 1946 received the Collegiata from Pius XII. the title Basilica minor .
