Italia received his technical training from his father, a master mason in Licata. His first work as an architect was the construction of the Chiesa di Sant'Angelo Carmelitano in Licata from 1653, which does not yet come close to the quality of his later buildings. In 1671, at the age of 43, he joined the Jesuit order and went to the Jesuit college in Palermo. During this time he must have traveled to Naples , Rome and other cities in Italy to study architecture there, because his designs show great originality in the building projects of this time, such as the Santissimo of Palermo, on which he worked. The Jesuit church of San Francesco da Saverio, in particular, is characterized by an unusual spatial conception, which points to knowledge of the buildings of Francesco Borromini , Girolamo and Carlo Rainaldi as well as Pietro da Cortona , because some of his architectural designs cite elements of their buildings that he included in his own complex, often involves hexagonal designs. He may also have met the architect and passionate Borromini supporter Guarino Guarini , who developed a brisk building activity in Messina in the second half of the 17th century. Borromini's formal language can be found, among other things, in his elliptical design for the church of the Jesuit college in Mazara del Vallo . In addition to church buildings, after the destruction by the severe earthquake of 1693, he presented drafts for the reconstruction of Avola , Noto and Lentini in the same year .
