history

The ancient city and the castle of Collodi were first mentioned in a document towards the end of the 12th century. At that time, wars made it necessary to build it; the population had to be brought out of the valley to safety. A castle was built on the hill of Colle di Odo .

Since the castle grounds lay on the border between the areas of the cities of Lucca and Florence , it meant that from 1329 the place repeatedly gave rise to violent disputes between the cities. It would take more than a hundred years to resolve the dispute. Collodi became one of the fortified outposts of Lucca, which brought abundant trade into the village. Olive trade, silk transports and the knowledge of making paper found their way into Collodi.

Attractions

Collodi is best known for the Villa Garzoni and the Pinocchio Park (" Parco di Pinocchio "), which has existed since 1956 .

The original city layout is well preserved and can be easily explored on foot. Below is the Villa Garzoni with its extensive gardens, from the upper part there is a broad view over the country. Only the ruins of the tower have survived from the castle complex; it is privately owned today.

In the upper part of the village is the Chapel of San Bartolomeo from the 12th century with several art treasures: a picture of the Virgin on the throne from the 16th century and a wooden sculpture of the Virgin and Child from the 15th century. From the same period comes a representation of the holy Lucia from terracotta , probably from the school of Matteo Civitali comes and another wooden sculpture representing the Holy Bartholomew shows. It probably comes from the school of Jacopo della Quercia . The church is open every Sunday afternoon.
