Comair was a US regional airline based in Boone County and a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines . For these regional and feeder flights it operated under the umbrella brand Delta Connection . Flight operations were suspended on September 29, 2012.

history

The airline was founded in 1977 by David Mueller and his father Raymond in Cincinnati and began flight service with three Piper PA-31s . In 1981 the company was listed on the stock exchange to fund growth. It became part of the Delta Connection umbrella brand in 1984. Delta Air Lines bought 20% of Comair in 1986 and took over all the shares in 1999 for over two billion US dollars .

In 2001 the Comair pilots went on strike and shut down operations for 89 days. At Christmas 2004 Comair had to cancel all 1160 flights due to a computer error, 30,000 passengers were affected.

In 2005, the parent company Delta Air Lines Comair temporarily moved under the protection of Chapter 11 insolvency paragraph .

In July 2012, Delta announced that Comair would cease operations and be wound up at the end of September 2012 due to restructuring within the group. Already in the previous years, almost 100 aircraft were successively decommissioned without replacement. This was mainly due to the fact that Delta wanted to greatly reduce its fleet of aircraft with 50 or fewer seats. The remaining Comair aircraft, which had more than 50 seats, were integrated into the main line Delta Airlines.

aims

Comair flew to many destinations in the USA, Canada and the Bahamas for Delta Air Lines under the Delta Connection brand . In addition to New York and Cincinnati, Greensboro and Orlando were other important hubs.

Incidents

  • On January 9, 1997, an Embraer EMB 120 crashed on Comair flight 3272 while approaching Detroit Airport . The pilots of the machine had lost control after ice had accumulated on the wings. None of the 29 people on board survived the crash.
  • On August 27, 2006, 49 people died in the take-off accident of a Comair-operated Bombardier CRJ100 on Comair flight 5191 . When it took off at 6:00 a.m. local time near Lexington, the machine rolled at high speed into a wooded area and burned out. She was on her way to Atlanta. A rushing police officer was just able to pull the copilot out of the cockpit , who was the only one who survived the crash. According to initial findings, the pilots took off from the wrong runway , which was 500 m too short for a successful start.
  • On 11 April 2011, a takeoff ready collided Airbus A380 of Air France with a Bombardier CRJ700 Comair. The accident occurred at around 8 p.m. at New York-John-F.-Kennedy Airport . The A380 with the serial number 049 and the aircraft registration F-HPJD hit the left wing tip of the T-tail of the stationary regional jet with 62 passengers and forcibly tore it around 90 degrees. Then the Airbus stopped. No major external damage to either aircraft was initially apparent. According to media reports, no inmates were injured. Both aircraft were taken out of service after the accident for a detailed inspection.
