Combat Arms is a multiplayer first person shooter from Doobic Studios . After it was sold by the South Korean computer game company Nexon , it was bought by the Valofe company in late 2017. The company stated the number of players as more than 10 million, meaning the total number of accounts created and not the number of active players. The game enables a free game based on the free-to-play principle, both against human opponents and against NPCs .

Gameplay

The game offers, like comparable competitors in the free-to-play segment, different game modes, including "One Man Army", "Elimination", "Capture the Flag" or "Elimination Pro". A ranking system is used to differentiate players from one another and to classify them according to experience and ability. In order to advance in rank, it is necessary to earn "EXP". You get these points after every game that you play to the end, regardless of your performance. The height of these points is influenced by factors such as the shooting ratio and the total playing time. The focus here, however, is on the playing time.

Equipment, weapons and accessories can be bought with so-called "Gear Points" (GP). Until June 21, 2017, many weapons were only available for purchase with real money. Since then, all game content can also be purchased with GP.

The game offers community features such as a simple clan system through which several players can join forces and compete against other clans.

Since the biggest game update to date, "Combat Arms - Reloaded", there have been some innovations, including the introduction of a matchmaking ranking list and the reintroduction of voice chat .

development

Combat Arms America

The closed beta started on May 30, 2008 . It was operated exclusively via FilePlanet and ran until June 6, 2008. In the closed beta, players had four maps and 30 weapons at their disposal.

Combat Arms America went into Open Beta on June 26, 2008 and was therefore available to the public. This phase was about finding bugs in order to fix them before the release.

Almost two weeks later, on July 11, 2008, the game was released. Combat Arms America was only available to players from Oceania and North and South America in closed and open beta. This changed after the server merger with Combat Arms Europe.

Combat Arms Europe

Combat Arms Europe's closed beta started on October 28, 2008. It ran until November 11, 2008 and players were able to test the game with 22 weapons on four different maps.

On December 16, 2008 the game went into the open beta phase. Again, the version was used to detect and fix bugs before it was released. It lasted just under a month.

Combat Arms Europe was released on January 15, 2009. The game was only available in Europe in closed and open beta. According to the developer, Combat Arms has over 7 million registered players in Europe alone.

Nexon Cash

Nexon Cash is the game's real money currency. In the past you could buy "black market" exclusive equipment or weapons. This NX-exclusive content has since been abolished. In the past, the community mentioned negatively the sometimes very unfair advantages of such equipment.

Ranking system

It is possible to level up by simply playing. The EXP required for this is mainly calculated by the length of the game, but also by personal performance in the game. On July 19, 2017, 5 new ranks were introduced under the name " Commander in Chief ". In the past, new weapons and equipment were unlocked with every rank up. This has been changed so that every time you reach a new rank you will now receive a bundle with multiple weapons and GP.

Basically it was intended that there was only a certain number of players per rank. This would have been based on the real model, the US Army . This would have had the consequence that players could have been demoted if another player had overtaken them with experience points. However, this idea was rejected again and there is now no limit to the ranks.

#makeCAgreatagain

The biggest update to date was announced in spring 2016. Under the name "makeCAgreatagain", the major project was presented to the community as a kind of revival of the game. It should also consist of several smaller and larger updates and revisions, which should extend over a period of approximately one year.

The two biggest innovations are the implementation of a new graphics engine and the implementation of a new user interface. In order to bring these innovations to the community step by step, there was a 4-part beta phase, which was marketed under the name "Combat Arms Janus". Other changes include the removal of the elite moderator and the megaphone item as well as the adaptation of almost all weapon statistics, the abolition of NX-exclusive items, revision of the server system and many other minor updates.

On June 21, 2017, the last stage of the beta ended and the update was made available to all players. Since then, the game has been nicknamed "Reloaded".

Game modes

There are currently 15 different game modes in Combat Arms.

elimination

In this mode, two teams with up to eight players compete against each other. The goal is to achieve a predetermined number of kills (30–140), ie enemy kills, in front of the opposing team. In this mode, if a player is shot down by the enemy, they can start over endlessly. It will then spawn back to the team base .

Elimination Pro

This mode is basically the same as elimination, only that the number of rounds won decide whether you win or lose. Two teams play against each other in five to eleven rounds. For example, if all Team Alpha players are eliminated, Team Bravo wins the round. The team that wins the most rounds wins the game. The major difference compared to the elimination mode, however, is that the player only receives a new life at the beginning of a new round and cannot start again indefinitely.

One Man Army

In this mode up to 16 players compete against each other. It is not played in teams, but everyone against everyone. The winner is whoever has reached a predetermined number of enemy kills (15, 30 or 45) first.

Last man standing

Last Man Standing is a mix of Elimination Pro and One Man Army. Each player is enemies with the others and only has one chance per round to collect kills. If he is shot down, he has to wait for the next round. The maximum number of laps is nine.

Search & Destroy

Two teams with up to eight players play against each other. It is played in rounds. A team has to try to place a bomb on two specified places. The other team has to prevent this. If it doesn't, it has up to 30 seconds to defuse the bomb. If the team succeeds in defusing it, it emerges as the winner. If they fail, the opponent wins.

Bombing Run

Similar to Search & Destroy, you can play 8 against 8. The bomb is in a central location and can be activated from both sides at one point. Then there is again 30 seconds to defuse the bomb.

Spy Hunt

This mode is about picking up five packages scattered around the map. Everyone plays against everyone. All players are allied against the spies, but as spies they are enemies with everyone (including the other spies). As soon as one has all five packages, he becomes a Super Spy . This receives significantly better equipment in terms of weapons and must try to upload to the object. The aim of the remaining players is to shoot down the Super Spy and thereby prevent it from uploading, but they only have one attempt. If they are shot down by the Super Spy , they have to wait for the game to end or they can leave the game early.

Fireteam

This mode for up to eight players is about a group of players fighting together against computer opponents. The given destination varies between the different maps. You either have to defend a given point from approaching zombies, fight your way through a terrorist-occupied city to a target, or storm a headquarters.

Seize & Secure

Here two teams (up to eight players) fight to hoist a flag in the center of the map and defend it until 45 seconds have elapsed. There is an adjustable time limit.

Quarantine rain

There are two parties here, people on the one hand and zombies on the other. It is the job of humans to hide or kill the zombies in order to stay alive; the zombies have to find and infect people so that they become zombies too. One can compare this to a kind of “hide and seek”.

Capture the flag

Each team has a flag that is set up in their own base. The team must steal the opposing flag and guard its own.

Hired guns

The hired guns fashion was introduced on August 10, 2011 . The game is played in five, seven or nine rounds of five minutes. The teams are tasked with stealing gold from a bank vault. You can call so-called Mercenary's for help, which costs you Play Points. The player receives 100 Play Points for each kill or pile of gold bars. The bank has 80 piles of gold bars that must be collected. If a player carries more than 10 piles of gold bars, the player loses 3% of his walking speed per pile. The team that was able to steal the most gold bars from the bank at the end of the round wins the round. For a round win, each player on the corresponding winning team receives an additional 500 points.

Arms Race

The Arms Race mode was released in March 2013. In Arms Race, each player receives a specific weapon. In the mode everyone plays against everyone and you can choose between 15, 30 and 45 kills. The weapon is usually fixed unless an Arms Race Pack is used. First, all players receive a weapon from the AR (Assault Rifle) category, usually first ACR, then M417CQB and then FS2000 (there is a small chance of getting a weapon equipped in the inventory). Depending on how many kills have been set, you have to play through one to three ARs. Then come the SMGs (Sub Machine Gun), here the order is KRISS, MP7, PP-19. Then comes the MG (Machine Gun) category: M60, RPK, MG42. Now it's the turn of the SG (shotguns): R870, M3 Super 90. After the SG, 12, 25 or 38 kills have been played. It is switched to SR (Sniper), M107 CQ SE. Next to last you get a pistol, Desert Eagle, and finally a hand grenade, M69HE Frag. If you have mastered all stages, you win. As soon as you get to the last stage, all players receive a message with a warning tone and the player is displayed on the map. If you use an Arms Race Pack (Silver or Gold), the choice of weapons can change.

VIP elimination

Here it is important to turn off a VIP .

VIP escort

Here, however, a VIP must be escorted.

server

Since the launch of Combat Arms, players have been split across multiple servers.

The server system was fundamentally changed by the Combat Arms EU and Combat Arms NA Association in the summer of 2015, so that the now increased number of players can be bundled.

With the publication of "Combat Arms - Reloaded" the classic server system was dissolved and instead replaced by individual game rooms.

Split by July 1, 2015

  • Winchester [Recruit]
Requirement: maximum rank recruit

This server is only accessible to beginners . It should make it easier for new users to get started by meeting equally strong opponents.

  • Rec Rules [Super Soldiers]
Requirement: none

Special rules are used on this server.

  • Germany Server (DACH)

Only Germans, Swiss and Austrians can play on this server.

  • Alpha [All]
Requirement: none

This server is suitable for all players. It is a standard server on which all maps and game modes can be played. Since every newly registered user has access, there is a high probability that hackers will be in the individual game rooms.

  • Bravo [All]
Requirement: none

This server is suitable for all players. It is a standard server on which all maps and game modes can be played. Since every newly registered user has access, there is a high probability that hackers will be in the individual game rooms.

  • Charlie [All]
Requirement: maximum K / D 5.00; Minimum rank Private 1st Class , maximum rank General of the Army .

This server is suitable for experienced players. It is a standard server on which all maps and game modes can be played.

  • Delta [Casual]
Requirement: maximum K / D 0.90; Minimum rank Private , maximum rank General of the Army

Only players with a K / D lower than 0.90 can be on this server. It is used to enable new players to develop their skills, which they have acquired in training mode and on the Winchester beginners' server , and to compete against equally strong opponents. There they can build up and improve their own K / D, as it might be difficult for them to expand their K / D on the standard servers because there are stronger opponents there who would be superior to them through their experience.

  • Victor [Elite]
Requirement: Minimum rank Sergeant 1st Class , maximum rank General of the Army

This server is primarily intended for experienced players. Since the minimum requirement for access to the server stipulates the rank of Sergeant 1st Class and the players can therefore have a wealth of experience, good players should meet players with the same high skills. This is intended to increase the fun of the game because the players there meet less weaker opponents. The probability of encountering hackers in the room is lower because most hackers have a very low rank and are usually banned before the prescribed minimum rank is reached.

  • Bull Terrier [clan]
Requirement: Member of a clan

Clan matches take place on this server. Every player who is in a clan has access. At least 4 players from each clan have to get together in one room so that the game can start. Almost every map and every game mode that Combat Arms has to offer can be played. At the end, the clan is credited with points, according to which the clan's level is determined.

  • Platinum [Black Market]
Requirement: NX minimum rank Copper

Only players who have already purchased the Combat Arms currency NX with real money and have reached the NX rank of Copper can join here. Above all, it was intended that players who could clearly buy better weapons through this virtual currency in the game, mainly compete here, because it causes other players great difficulties when they meet an opponent who is clearly superior to them through his arsenal of weapons. However, Nexon's goal was not achieved.

  • Foxtrot [Fireteam]
Requirement: none

Only the Fireteam game mode is possible on this server . Players come together in teams to compete against computer opponents. However, this game mode is also possible on some other servers.

The servers are often heavily overloaded due to overcrowding or hacking attacks. This often affects the Alpha or Bravo server, as hackers have unlimited access.

Anticheat devices

Due to increasing problems with fraudulent players, protection programs are also used. The game Hackshield from AHNLAB has currently implemented, which is supposed to prevent the use of unfair means. GuardCAT is used in the Korean version. Game accounts that are used for fraudulent gaming are excluded from gaming by the protection programs. In the English forum of the game's official website, the community of players actively helps to fix various remaining problems in the game, even after commercial release.

In order to fix and prevent problems, patches appear at irregular intervals to improve the procedure against cheaters and hackers.

Despite the many precautionary measures, there are an enormous number of hacks on the Internet. Most are discovered, but unfortunately the hack shield can be bypassed by any hack. The patches usually only make the game hack-free for about three days, after which they are often bypassed again. However, since there are some so-called VIP hacks for which money is paid in order to receive additional functions and the fastest possible updates, there are often working hacks again just a few hours after an update.
