Combretum paniculatum is a plant species in the genus of long filaments ( Combretum ) with wide distribution in Africa , west of Gambia to east to Ethiopia and in the south to Angola . In the countries of the Sudan Zone, it usually grows along watercourses.

Generative characteristics

In the dry season, the numerous, intensely red flowers bloom , which stand in small spikes within a larger, panicley branched inflorescence (inflorescence) - hence the common English name burning bush .

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Combretum paniculatum ssp. paniculatum : The number of chromosomes is 2n = about 78.
  • Combretum paniculatum ssp. microphyllum (Klotzsch) Wickens , partly treated as a separate species ( Combretum microphyllum Klotzsch ). The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.
