description

The valley is located in the north-eastern part of the province of Biella in the protection of the Alpine peaks of the Monte Rosa group and has its highest point in the 2556 m high Bo. In the north it borders on the Valsesia Valley, in the east on the Cervo Valley and in the south on the Mosso Valley. The higher part of the valley has no permanent settlements, but is only visited in summer by the ranchers of the Biella area, who still carry out the alpine lifts, with the cattle being driven up to the alpine pastures of which the valley is rich. Administratively, the area still consists of montane administrative islands, which belong to the municipalities of the Biella area, which assign their use for pasture farming to their ranchers. At the beginning of the upper Valsessera valley, on the two opposite sides, are the pilgrimage church of Novareia and the pilgrimage church of Cavallero , both of which are touched by the religious hiking trail Coeur - In the heart of the paths of Europe .

The part of the valley that lies below Coggiola , on the other hand, is densely populated and the seat of numerous industrial plants.

Historical clues

The valley was the scene of the Fra Dolcino movement in the Middle Ages , and during World War II it served as a shelter for the partisans of the Italian resistance .

natural reserve

In addition to the fact that part of it belongs to the Oasi Zegna already mentioned, the upper valley, together with the upper Cervo valley, has been included in the Site of Community Importance (SCI) of the European Natura 2000 network called “Val Sessera” (code IT1130002) Covers 10,786.73 hectares.

The presence of the endemic beetle Carabus olympiae is particularly relevant .

tourism

The main tourist attraction is the Bielmonte ski area, the junction between the Sessera valley and the Mosso valley a little further east of the Bocchetto di Sessera pass ( 1382  m slm ), which lies between the two valleys. Most of the accommodation facilities are on the Strona di Mosso side, but the ski slopes (downhill and cross-country skiing) extend far into the Valsessera valley, the slopes of which are oriented in such a way that the snow stays longer despite the relatively low altitude.
