The Coney Island Mermaid Parade (German: Coney Island Mermaid Parade ) takes place every year in Coney Island , Brooklyn , New York . It is the largest art parade in the United States . The parade is held annually at the beginning of summer and is considered the summer welcome party. The parade is organized by the non-profit arts organization Coney Island USA. The 36th parade took place on Saturday June 16, 2018.
The parade
The parade celebrates the start of summer and traditionally takes place on the Saturday before the summer solstice on June 21, regardless of the weather on that day. The purpose of the parade is to promote self-expression, promote the Coney Island neighborhood and give New York artists a platform for their projects. The parade has no ethnic, religious or commercial goals.
The event also pays homage to the Mardi Gras parades in Coney Island in the early 20th century. During this time, Coney Island was the most popular destination for amusement park lovers. Like the annual Halloween Parade in New York, this parade follows the artistic spirit of Mardi Gras, similar to Carnival .
The parade typically attracts around 3,000 participants and hundreds of thousands of visitors from all 5 boroughs of New York. Coney Island is also visited by many of the parade visitors at this time to cool off during New York's hot summer months. The Mermaid Parade is considered the largest art parade in the United States.
history
The first parade was held in 1983, conceptualized and organized by Dick Zigun, often referred to as the unofficial mayor of Coney Island. He is also the founder of the nonprofit Coney Island USA.
The June 22, 2013 parade was almost canceled as funds were needed for the parade to rebuild after Hurricane Sandy . A successful fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, which brought in over US $ 117,000, guaranteed the parade to go ahead.
motto
The parade is known for its maritime, sometimes revealing costumes, but also as a very family-friendly event. The train contains all kinds of vehicles and wagons, all kinds of groups, individual artists. Above all, maritime disguises and art projects dominate the image of the parade.
Every year there is a King Neptune and a Mermaid Queen, similar to the prince couple at the carnival .
The parade organizers claim that bribery can help ensure a greater chance of winning one of the parade's many costume competitions. The Mermaid Parade also inspired the Zeemeerminnen parade in The Hague , which has been held annually in the Netherlands since 2010. The Cambridge Arts Council of Massachusetts is planning a similar parade during the 2019 Cambridge Arts River Festival. [Obsolete]
