Confluence is a commercial wiki - software , which the Australian company Atlassian develops and as Enterprise Wiki is mainly used for the documentation and communication of knowledge and the exchange of knowledge in companies and organizations, but increasingly also comes as a basis for public wikis on the Internet is used. Confluence is currently used in over 40,000 teams.

history

Confluence was developed by Atlassian with the aim of providing a wiki for Java software development teams - an "application that meets the requirements of an enterprise knowledge management system without losing the underlying powerful simplicity of a wiki for this process." The first version of Confluence (V 1.0) was presented on November 6, 2003.

Functionality

Editor (s)

Up to version 3.5 Confluence used the markup language Textile . In addition to the wiki markup editor, it also contained a WYSIWYG editor. For example, the textile markup looked like this:

function Wiki markup
create internal link [Title of the page]
create an external link [http://www.wikipedia.de]
headlines h1 ... main heading
h2 ... heading level 2
h3 ... heading level 3
Formatting * in bold *
_ italic_
+ underlined +
insert Picture ! bild.jpg!
List creation * Level 1
** level 2

With version 4.0, the combined wiki markup / WYSIWYG editor was replaced by an XML -based rich text WYSIWYG editor. In addition to drag and drop , auto-completion of links and macros , the new editor also supports the input of the previous textile markup and converts this immediately when entering text.

Confluence is easy to expand with interfaces and plug-ins .

Customers and Licensing

The manufacturer's list of customers shows many large and internationally active companies, including SUN , IBM , Audi , Accenture , Cisco , Nokia , Airbus , but also organizations and institutions such as the UN , CERN or the BBC and some universities such as Johns Hopkins University or Stanford University . In Germany, for example, Deutsche Bahn , the German National Library , the Federal Armed Forces , the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the online lexicon Meyers Lexikon use the software online , in Austria Vienna Airport , the University of Vienna and A1 Telekom Austria .

The licensing system was diversified until 2012: free for non-profit organizations , half the price for academic institutions and full price for commercial use.

In November 2012 the license model was changed. The package prices according to the number of users have doubled, the volume is now licensed for up to 10,000+ users in the form of an enterprise license. Many plugins and extensions from third-party manufacturers such as Bob Swift or CustomWare that were initially free of charge are now associated with license costs. The licenses are not only distributed by Atlassian itself, but also by partners in various countries. These usually offer additional services such as installation, maintenance and hosting.

Confluence can currently be licensed as a cloud solution or on-premises (self-managed). There is an inexpensive or free starter package for up to 10 users.
