Congochromis sabinae is a West African freshwater fish from the cichlid family. It occurs in the Congo Basin in the Likouala and Sangha riversin the north of the Republic of the Congo and in the Liboumba in the Ogooué basin in Gabon . The fish was first described as Nanochromis sabinae by Anton Lamboj in 2005andassigned tothe newly established genus Congochromis in 2007.

Appearance

Congochromis sabinae is moderately elongated in shape, with a round head and snout profile and reaches a length of up to seven centimeters. The back of the neck and the gill cover are scaled, the throat region is provided with one or two rows of scales. The caudal fin is rounded. A dark longitudinal band extends from the eyes to the tail fin stalk. It is visible in both sexes, but only depending on the mood, and does not extend to the caudal fin. The head may appear deep orange, with the trunk then being light. The female remains a little smaller and is more rounded. Its genital opening is surrounded by silvery scales. Above that, a more or less visible sickle-shaped brightening. Females mature to spawn have a slightly rosy belly.

Way of life

Congochromis sabinae lives in small rainforest streams. He is a monogamous , pair-forming hideout breeder . Mainly the female cleans the eggs and leads the young fish. The male takes over the defense.
