Connie Francis sings Award Winning Motion Picture Hits is the title of an album by Connie Francis .
background
In April 1962 Connie Francis worked mainly in Europe, where she recorded some German songs in the Austrophon Studios in Vienna and shot her outdoor scenes for the feature film Mein Schiff Fahrt zu dir (English original title: Follow the Boys ) on the Italian and French Riviera .
From April 26th to 28th, she stayed in Rome, where she recorded thirteen songs for a concept album that included film songs that were awarded the Academy Award .
The songs in detail:
- All the Way from the movie The Joker is Wild (1957)
- Buttons and Bows from the movie The Paleface (1948)
- High hopes from the movie A Hole in the Head (1959)
- Lullaby of Broadway from the film Gold Diggers of 1935 (1935)
- Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
- Over The Rainbow from the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939)
- The Last Time I Saw Paris from the film Lady Be Good (1941)
- The Way You Look Tonight from Swing Time (1936)
- Secret Love from the movie Calamity Jane (1953)
- Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Qué Será, Será) from The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
- When You Wish upon a Star from the movie Pinocchio (1940)
- You'll Never Know from the film Hello, Frisco, Hello (1943)
- Zip-a-Dee-Dooh-Dah from the movie Song of The South (1947)
The instrumental backing tracks of these songs were already under the management of previously Geoff Love in the Abbey Road Studios of EMI in London have been added. The corresponding tapes were brought to Rome , where Connie Francis recorded her vocals as overdub in the RCA Italiana Studios . However, the artist was not satisfied with the finished result, so the release of the album, originally planned for early summer 1962, was canceled.
The album remained untouched until March 1963. By then, the song Days of Wine and Roses from the film of the same name had won the Academy Award for best film song in 1962. Under the musical direction of Don Costa , Connie Francis recorded her own version of this song and at the same time picked up the as yet unreleased album. Still unhappy with the original 1962 recordings, the singer asked Costa to add new instrumental playbacks as overdubs to her vocals.
Between March 15 and April 4, 1963, Costa recorded new playbacks for twelve of the thirteen recordings from Rome. It was Over the Rainbow reduced by repeating the second stanza, which was the total playing time of the song reduced from 3:48 minutes to 2:36 minutes clear. The title Buttons and Bows was not revised and remained completely unpublished until 1996.
The remaining twelve new versions were finally released together with Days of Wine and Roses in May in the USA as the 13-track MGM Records album E-4048 (mono-compression) and SE-4048 (stereo-compression). The worldwide publication followed soon afterwards, among others
- in Germany as MGM Records Album 65 037 (mono) and 665 037 (stereo) under the original title
- in Great Britain as MGM Records album MGM-C-940 (mono) and MGM-CS-6070 (stereo) under the original title
- in Brazil as MGM Records album LP-30.013 (mono) under the title Connie Francis canta temas cinematográficos premiados
- in Italy as MGM Records album EM 4048 (mono) under the title Le canzoni degli Oscar presentate da Connie Francis
When it was released in Australia (as MGM Records album S 027592) and in New Zealand (as MGM Records album MCS 5017), the master tapes were mixed up , so that the album here with the original playbacks from 1962 and with the omission of Days of Wine and Roses was released in a 12-track version.
When Connie Francis recorded German versions of Over the Rainbow and Moon River in 1966 for her album Melodies that Conquer the World, the original playbacks from 1962 were used.
