The Continental Cup is an annual three-band tournament series that started in December 2018 . The first tournament was named in honor of Raymond Ceulemans and took place in Vigean, a suburb of the French wine town of Bordeaux . In 2019 the official name was "E Best Continental Cup" and was held in the South Korean capital, Seoul .
General information
On February 22nd, 2018, Xavier Carrer , CEO of the TV broadcaster Kozoom , announced that there would be several new tournament series this year, including the “Ceulemans Continental Cup”. The Ryder Cup in golf and the Mosconi Cup in pool serve as a model . These tournaments are played between Europe and the USA. The difference, however, is that Europe doesn't just play against one country (USA), but against one continent (Asia). Corresponding negotiations with the world association Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) have been conducted and approved. The first naming as "Continental Cup" was added later after an idea of Willem La Riviera, director of the Dutch billiards association KNBB, in honor of the 35-time world champion Raymond Ceulemans .
In the winning team, each player will receive US $ 15,000 in prize money. The losers receive US $ 5,000 each. Kozoom will cover the travel and hotel costs. In addition to the obligatory black trousers and shoes, the dress code provides for colored polo shirts, blue for Europe, yellow (2018) and red (2019) for Asia.
Tournament mode
Each continent has eight participants. These are selected according to the last world rankings of the previous year. The game is played in a relay system with 600 points. Up to 200 points are played on each game day. These are divided into eight sessions (sections) of 25 points each. Player 1 Europe and Player 1 Asia play until one of them has reached the required 25 points. Then the players change. The players 2 continue to play with the same ball positions until the leading team has reached 50 points, then another player change takes place. Only the leading team plays to the goal of the game, the other team can continue to play and gain points until the leading team has achieved this. There is only one pool table in the tournament hall. In an anteroom there are two more billiard tables where the players can play. This means that there is no break in playing when changing players.
The shot clock stood at 40 seconds in 2018 and each player had two extra times. Both time limits were reduced to 30 seconds in 2019.
