Systematics

Convolvulus dorycnium was first published by Carl von Linné in 1759 . It is divided into three subspecies:

  • Convolvulus dorycnium L. subsp. dorycnium : the outer sepals are obovate and blunt to marginalized with a short spike tip. It occurs from the central Mediterranean area to Iran.
  • Convolvulus dorycnium L. subsp. oxysepalus (Boiss.) Rech.f. : the outer sepals are lanceolate-elongated and pointed to pointed with a long spike tip. It occurs from the eastern Mediterranean to Afghanistan.
  • Convolvulus dorycnium L. subsp. subhirsutus (Regel & Schmalh.) Sa'ad : It occurs from northeastern Iran to Central Asia and Afghanistan.

Occurrence

Convolvulus dorycnium grows in dry ruderal locations.

Convolvulus dorycnium subsp. dorycnium occurs in Europe in southern Greece and Crete , in Western Asia on the East Aegean Islands, in western Anatolia as well as in Cyprus and in North Africa in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Convolvulus dorycnium subsp. oxysepalus is distributed further east and occurs in eastern and southern Anatolia, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and Iran, but is absent in Cyprus.
