Cookin 'with the Miles Davis Quintet is a jazz album recorded by the Miles Davis Quintet in October 1956 and released by Prestige Records the following year. It is the first of four albums that resulted from the legendary recording sessions of May 11th and October 26th, 1956. The trumpeter, who had already switched to the major label Columbia Records , thus fulfilled his contract with Prestige.

background

The pieces on the album were part of the group's repertoire. The concept of the sessions was to record this live repertoire in studio sessions. In the two studio sessions, Miles Davis named the pieces to be played as it would be for a live program in a club, there was only one take at a time. A total of 24 tracks were recorded, the remaining tracks were released on three other albums.

When asked about the album title, Davis said:

"After all, that's what we did — came in and cooked."

"After all, that's what we did - we came in and cooked."

The album was originally released on CD in the US in 1987. It was last remastered for Prestige Records in 2006 by Rudy Van Gelder , the sound engineer for the original sessions.
