The Coongie Lakes National Park ( English Coongie Lakes National Park ) is located in the outback of the Australian state of South Australia , about 80 km northwest of Innamincka . It was placed under protection in 2005 to protect it from damage caused by the extraction of natural resources, among other things.

General

The park represents an untouched water world, which is composed of canals, water holes, lakes, deltas, flat plains, dune areas and swamps. While the Coongie Lakes have water most of the time, other extensive areas are only flooded after heavy rainfall and flood events, which is why the park is occasionally closed to the public. The contrast between sand dunes and extensive swamp lands is remarkable for the landscape.

The national park is an old settlement area of the Aboriginal tribes Yandruwandha, Yawarrawarrka and Dieri .

animals and plants

Surrounded by dry lands, this wetland is of great importance for the flora and fauna. This applies in particular to birds, of which 205 different species have been observed so far, including 87 species that rely on bodies of water or wetlands. The area is also of great importance as a feeding and resting area for migratory birds. At times tens of thousands of water birds can be counted in a single body of water. Notable species include the monkey duck , spectacled pelican , red-headed avocet , plover and the desert wheatear . In addition, 20 native mammals, 36 reptiles, 12 fish and ten amphibians were counted.

Furthermore, around 350 different plant species have been documented so far.

tourism

There are various camping options in the area of the lakes. The government of South Australia recommends thorough travel preparation to avoid unnecessary risks.

Other categories of protection

The national park is surrounded by the "Innamincka Regional Reserve", which was designated in 1988. It is also classified as a protected area under the Ramsar Convention .
