The Innes National Park (English Innes National Park ) is located in the state of South Australia of Australia , about 300 kilometers from Adelaide . It has an area of ​​9415 hectares and was placed under protection in January 1970.

General

Innes National Park is at the tip of the Yorke Peninsula . Here you will find a spectacular coastal landscape that has many natural habitats and yet offers a whole range of leisure activities. Originally it was placed under protection in order to preserve the habitat of the rare and endangered songbird species Psophodes nigrogularis .

In the park you meet the landscapes coastal heath , Mallee , open grasslands, beaches , sandbars , Kasuarinenwälder and rocky cliffs on.

history

Originally this area was settled by the Aboriginal tribe of the Narrunga . The first European settlers took land around Cape Spencer for sheep grazing around 1847. The national park is named after William Robert Innes, who found economically usable deposits of gypsum in the area at the beginning of the 20th century , which were then also exploited until around 1930.

Flora and fauna

So far, around 140 species of birds have been identified in the national park, including emu , osprey , peregrine falcon , little penguin and wedge tailed eagle . Also noteworthy are the occurrences of the thermometer chicken and the endangered caped plover, which only occurs in Australia . The once widespread Derby wallaby suffered a severe population decline in the first half of the last century, but has a stable population in Innes National Park. Reptiles are represented by the species brown snake , pine cone lizard and eastern bearded dragon .

So far, the occurrence of over 330 naturally occurring plant species in the national park has also been documented, 115 of which are particularly in need of protection.

There is a visitor center in the park, campsites, rest areas and toilets are also available. Various hiking trails open up the various landscapes to visitors and lead to interesting viewpoints. From Stenhouse Bay and Cape Spencer one can in the winter months Südkaper observed.
