The Onkaparinga River National Park ( English Onkaparinga River National Park ) is located in the Australian state of South Australia , about 35 km south of Adelaide city ​​center . It covers 1,554 hectares.

General

The Onkaparinga River flows into the national park in a steep-walled valley and passes it in an impressive gorge with steep walls up to 50 m high and water basins formed from rocks. After flowing through the Onkaparinga River Recreation Park to the west , it flows into the sea.

This area has always had a deep cultural and religious significance for the members of the Aboriginal tribe of the Kaurna .

nature

Various types of eucalyptus dominate the plant species that occur. Casuarines and golden acacias also occur. Among other things, 27 different orchid species were counted. In winter and spring, the national park's bushland is adorned with colorful wildflowers.

tourism

In the park there are various hiking trails of different lengths and levels of difficulty that open up individual parts of the park. Rest areas are also available. There is also the possibility of sailing and fishing in the river.
