action

A preacher is interrupted by two children while he is preaching. He and the children go to a certain Sampson's house. Sampson and the preacher drive to the jail. Meanwhile, two black people try to escape from this prison. They wait for Sampson by a wall. The older one tells the other a story of three guys who were of the same kind, namely Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear and Preacher Fox. The three of them were enjoying themselves in a rural brothel when the sheriff and his deputy want to end the evening with a visit to the brothel. When the rabbit referred them to the sheriff's daughter, the situation escalated: the deputy was shot and his boss was stabbed to death. The three escape in a car. They decide to go to Harlem, New York, the best haven for blacks. They go to a club that is home to a sect that calls for a black revolution. Brother Rabbit causes the crowd to rebel against the Savior by stopping giving him money. The three spend the rest of the night in the Savior's nightclub, where his people try to kill them. However, Brother Rabbit and Brother Bear can kill the Savior. Brother Rabbit now takes over the leadership of the preacher's gang. However, he still has two problems in Harlem: a corrupt police officer and the mafia.

The cop Mannigan takes protection money from the brothels and casinos in Harlem. But when he doesn't get any money several times because the hare has already collected, he drives to the hare's club, the hare's den. There he does not meet the hare, but is offered a drink. While he is watching a stripper enthusiastically, an LSD sugar cube is added to his drink. While he's on a trip, his makeup is put on so that he looks like he's black. Then he is put into a woman's dress. He starts shooting around in the yard. He is shot by the arriving police. After Mannigan is dead, the mafia sees itself threatened and decides to kill the rabbit. One of the godfather's sons should do that, Sonny. He dresses up and shoots the rabbit with a machine gun. But he meets Brother Bear, who then collapses. Sonny has a car accident and dies.

criticism

"In the combination of real and cartoon sequences, Ralph Bakshi creates an aggressive and polemical image of the social chaos in America of the 60s and 70s, carried by macabre humor."
