Copiapoa echinoides is a species of plant in the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet echinoides comes from the Greek and means' similar to a hedgehog 'and refers to the prickly habit of the plant'.

Copiapoa echinoides grows singly or forming dense cushions. The green shoots are firm and spherical in shape. Your parting is a little flattened and woolly. They measure 7 to 18 centimeters in diameter. The 11 to 18  ribs are trimmed. The areoles are yellowish, graying with age. The thorns are colored maroon to black. They are straight to slightly curved upwards. There are up to three central spines 1 to 3 centimeters in length and six to ten radial spines.

The light yellow flowers are fragrant. They become 3.5 to 4 inches long. The round fruits are brownish to red and have few scales.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa echinoides is widespread in Chile in the Región de Atacama near Totoral.

It was first described in 1845 as Echinocactus echinoides by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1922 to the genus Copiapoa established by them . Further synonyms are Hildmannia cupreata (Poselg. Ex Schum.) Kreuzinger & Buining (1941, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Copiapoa cupreata (Poselg. Ex Rümpl.) Backeb. (1959), Neoporteria tuberisculata var. Cupreata (Poselg.) Donald & GDRowley (1966) and Copiapoa echinoides var. Cuprea (F.Ritter) AEHoffm. (1989).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
