Copsi

Copsi ( Old English Cōpsige ; † 1067 ) was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman from Northumbria and 1067 Earl of Northumbria .

Copsi was a supporter of Tostig Godwinson and went into exile with him in 1065 on the Orkney Islands , which were then part of the Kingdom of Norway . The following year, he returned and joined Tostig in Sandwich in the county of Kent with 17 ships to. He survived Tostig's defeat at the Battle of Stamford Bridge .

After William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings , Copsi went to Barking , a suburb of London in March 1067 , where William the Conqueror resided until the Tower of London was built. There Copsi paid homage to Wilhelm, in return he received the title Earl of Northumbria and was sent back to York . Five weeks later, Copsi was born to Osulf II , son of Eadwulf III. († 1041), the Earl of Bamburgh , murdered. Osulf ruled as Earl of Northumbria until autumn.
