Lyle Campbell

Lyle Richard Campbell (born October 22, 1942 in Oregon ) is an American linguist . His main focus is on historical linguistics and the indigenous American languages , especially those of Central America . The Finno-Ugric Studies also part of his research. He is currently Professor of Linguistics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa .

Life

Campbell grew up in Oregon. He did his BA in archeology and anthropology in 1966 , but then stated that he wanted to do something that was important and from which people could benefit; accordingly, a year later he did an MA in historical linguistics at the University of Washington . His master's thesis dealt with Finnish phonology . In 1971 he did his Ph.D. at UCLA . He mainly worked on the documentation of various Latin American languages and their linguistic investigation. Many of these indigenous languages are threatened with extinction, such as the Nawat (Pipil) and the Potón (Lenca) in El Salvador. In his dissertation he examined the eight dialects of the Quiché language , which is still the most widely spoken Mayan language in Guatemala today.

Campbell has also given guest lectures at many universities, including Hamburg , Mexico and Helsinki .

In 1998 and 2000 he received the Leonard Bloomfield Book Award from the Linguistic Society of America .
