Cora is a German pop duo. It was founded in the early 1980s at the height of the Neue Deutsche Welle in Berlin by the two musicians Cornelia von dem Bottlenberg (* 1951) and Swetlana von dem Bottlenberg (née Minkow) (* 1951 in Bulgaria ).

Career

As a young girl, Cora and Swetlana tried independently of each other to gain a foothold in the German hit business. Cora and her brother Frank von dem Bottlenberg, both family members of the noble gentlemen von dem Bottlenberg , released several singles as the duo Cora & Frank at the end of the 1960s . Swetlana also released singles during this time.

The two musicians met and fell in love with each other in the 1970s as background singers for the recordings of the singles He belongs to me and Marleen from Marianne Rosenberg . Until the early 1980s, Cora and Swetlana were touring Europe with various bands and projects in discos and clubs in order to entertain the audience with a mixture of song and dance. One of the bands was called Ladygirls . The trio ( Agnes Radić completed the group) released a single and an album entitled The Golden 70s .

In the early 1980s, the artists also worked as songwriters and producers for other artists for the first time. During this time, two publications were made with the duo Conny & Jean (1983: The feeling of living for one another and 1985: You are there ). With Du bist da they took part in 1985 as background singers in the TV broadcast of the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , Conny & Jean took eleventh and penultimate place.

With the help of Frank Farian , the album Liebeskummer was created in 1983 . With the exception of the evening in the disco , Cora gave her voice to all the tracks on this LP. In 1984 Cora wrote the song Amsterdam (Love has totally failed) for Juliane Werding , but Werding refused. Farian then produced the song together with Cora. Amsterdam was the first single release on which Swetlana was responsible for the vocals. The title became a hit in the airplay charts. The English version of the song, released almost a year later, reached the French charts and stayed in the top 30 for four months. A French version of the hit was recorded in 1986 by Michèle Torr and released as a single in France.

In 1990 Cora were awarded the Golden Europe for the single In the Name of Love by Saarländischer Rundfunk as the best newcomer of the year . After that it became quieter for the band. In 1992 the last single was released for the time being.

The two musicians now living in partnership (Swetlana took the name of Cora) moved to Golm to run a hotel restaurant.

At the end of 2003 Cora began their comeback . First, the two released a remix of their hit Amsterdam and an album of their greatest successes. At the end of 2004 an album with new material was released. In 2007 and 2008 they released compilations with their biggest hits and some new songs, of which Du Belst zu mir appeared as a single and In the Name of Love in a remixed version.

Cornelia as a child star

Cornelia von dem Bottlenberg achieved her first fame as a eight-year-old: in 1959 she played the role of the girl Anneliese in the German television film Peterchens Mondfahrt .
