Cordt Schmidt

Cordt Schmidt (born March 17, 1935 in Stralsund ) is a retired German electrochemist and university lecturer for electrochemistry and electroplating . From 1985 to 2000 he was professor at the Technical University / University of Ilmenau and from 1985 to 1990 Vice Rector .

Life

Corst Schmidt studied electrical engineering from 1956 to 1961, specializing in electrochemistry and electroplating at the University of Applied Sciences for Electrical Engineering (HfE) Ilmenau . After receiving his doctorate under Josef Hampel , he began teaching and research in 1966 at the Institute for Electrochemistry and Electroplating Technology, which has meanwhile been elevated to the Technical University of Ilmenau. From 1971 Cordt Schmidt was a university lecturer for electrochemical technology at the electrical engineering section of the TH Ilmenau. At the same time he worked from 1971 to 1974 at VEB Galvanotechnik Leipzig (GTL) as a development engineer and was involved in the development and technical implementation of processes and systems for the production of copper foil for the printed circuit board industry. For this achievement, the development team received the national award of the GDR 2nd class.

On 10 May 1985 he habilitated with a thesis on "Analysis, systematization and phenomenological description of electric crystallization in the electrolytic deposition of copper films with high current densities ."

Nine dissertations and a number of diploma theses were carried out under his direction. In September 1985, Cordt Schmidt was appointed full professor for the field of automation of electrotechnological systems in the electrical engineering section of the Ilmenau University of Technology .

After Heinz Liebscher retired , Cordt Schmidt was entrusted with the provisional management of the electrochemistry and electroplating department of the Institute for Materials of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology between 1997 and 2000. In 2000, Cordt Schmidt retired and handed over management to Christine Jakob .

Cordt Schmidt also found recognition for his teleteaching lectures in the Thuringian joint study course in materials science .

Services

His scientific work led to the realization that multiple twinning determines the structure type and thus the properties of the copper layers in the electrolytic copper deposition with high current density . Extensive series of tests - also on other metals - succeeded in supplementing and specifying the generally applicable doctrine on the connection between overvoltage and crystal structure , especially in the area of ​​twinning, which had been established by Hellmuth Fischer up to that point .
