Christine Jakob

Minna Hildegard Christine Jakob (born January 11, 1948 in Mügeln ; † March 24, 2019 ) was a German university professor . She was a professor at the Technical University / University of Ilmenau and from 2000 to 2013 head of the department for electrochemistry and electroplating in the cross-faculty institute "Chemistry, electrochemistry and electroplating".

Life

Even while attending school in Engelsdorf (Leipzig) , she became interested in chemical processes and in 1964 began a three-year vocational training as a chemical laboratory assistant with a high school diploma. From 1967 she studied at the Technical University of Ilmenau, Faculty for Heavy Current Technology in the field of electrochemistry and electroplating and graduated in 1972 as a graduate engineer. A six-year assistantship with Heinz Liebscher ended in 1978 with a doctorate on the subject of "Influence of hydrodynamic conditions on the electrodeposition process".

In 1979 Christine Jakob switched to precious metal electroplating at VEB Elektroglas Ilmenau , where she also introduced the partial finishing of carrier materials for microelectronic components. In 1983 Christine Jakob returned to the TH Ilmenau. She worked in the field of glass and ceramic technology in the device technology section under Dagmar Hülsenberg and examined the electrochemical and electrophoretic processes involved in the corrosion of carbon electrodes in the porcelain industry. Christine Jakob submitted her habilitation in the field of glass and ceramic technology in 1988 on the subject of “conduction mechanism and electrode optimization in the electrochemical dewatering of ceramic slurries in the porcelain industry” . In February 1989 she was appointed university lecturer for electrochemical engineering and returned to the electrical engineering section and later the electrical engineering and information technology faculty. There she took over the field of materials technology, set up the subjects and courses in electrochemical technology ( batteries , fuel cells , electrolysers , hydrogen economy ) and the associated hydrogen laboratory for all energy technology students.

After Heinz Liebscher retired in 1997 and Cordt Schmidt in 2000, she was given an unscheduled professorship and she became head of electrochemistry and electroplating. At this time she began extensive investigations into nickel dispersion layers with nanoscale ceramic particles in close cooperation with the TU Chemnitz.

She was married and had two children.

Services

In the field of dispersion layers, it has been possible to maintain close cooperation with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for many years . The cooperation agreement between the TU Sofia and the TU Ilmenau from 1967 was used for joint research and investigations in this area.

In order to strengthen training in the field, an interdisciplinary institute "Chemistry, Electrochemistry and Electroplating" was founded under Christine Jakob at the TU Ilmenau between the chemistry department of the mathematical and natural science faculty and its department at the faculty for electrical engineering and information technology.

Since a chair for electrochemistry no longer existed in German-speaking countries in the last few decades, it initiated together with the Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik eV (ZVO), the German Society for Electroplating and Surface Technology. V. (DGO) and the Technical University of Ilmenau set up an endowed professorship in "Electrochemistry and Electroplating". The chair is primarily intended to secure the theoretical training in this subject in the future and to close the gap that has arisen. Together with the endowed professor Andreas Bund, who was appointed in 2010 , she prepared the establishment of a non-consecutive master's degree in "Electrochemistry and Electroplating".

In addition to teaching and numerous publications, she supervised 50 diploma theses, 5 dissertations and one habilitation.

Volunteering

Christine Jakob was a co-founder of the Rheuma-Liga Thuringia and was president of the regional association. In 1992 she was elected to the board of the federal association and was its president from 1996 to 2008 and then honorary president until her death.

She was the equal opportunities officer of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the TU Ilmenau.

Awards

In 2001 she received the DGO Leuze Prize for a series of publications.

In 2010 she received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her voluntary work, including twelve years as President of the Federal Association of the Rheuma League .

In recognition and appreciation of special services to rheumatology, the German Society for Rheumatology awarded her the Kussmaul Medal in 2010 .
