Cornel Lucas

Henry Cornel Lucas (born September 12, 1920 in London , England - † November 8, 2012 in London) was a British photographer .

Life

Henry Cornel Lucas grew up as one of eight children in the London borough of Highbury . He started photography at the age of 13. At 15 he had his own photo lab and at 19 he began studying photography at Regent Street Polytechnic . During the Second World War he served in the Royal Air Force and helped to develop spy photography systems and evaluate war photos. After the war, he moved to Los Angeles to establish himself as a photographer. However, he could not prevail and returned to London .

Lucas was then able to start his career as a photographer as a studio photographer for filmmakers. When he stepped in as a substitute photographer for a photo shoot by Marlene Dietrich , Lucas had his breakthrough. He soon founded his own studio with pool studio , which mainly worked for Pinewood Studios and produced up to 1000 photos per week and sent them worldwide. When the era of contract actors came to an end, Lucas left Pinewood in 1959 and continued to work as a freelance photographer until the late 1990s. He photographed stars such as David Niven , Stewart Granger , Joan Collins , Leslie Caron , Dirk Bogarde , Cyd Charisse and Lauren Bacall .

With Heads and Tales: The Film Portraits of Cornel Lucas (1988) and Shooting Stars: Camera Portraits (2005) he published his work as books. His work has also been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery , the National Media Museum and The Photographers' Gallery . In 1998 he received a BAFTA award for his life's work .

Lucas died on November 8, 2012 at the age of 92. He was married twice in his life. His first marriage to actress Belinda Lee lasted from 1954 to 1959. She remained childless. From 1959 until his death, Lucas was married to actress Susan Travers . The couple had three sons and a daughter together.
