Cornel Popa (born March 17, 1935 in Iași ; † November 4, 1999 ) was a Romanian football player and coach . The full-back contested 262 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A .

Career as a player

Popa began playing football in his hometown of Iași and took part in the courses of the junior national team in Câmpulung and Bistrița in 1952 and 1953 . He moved in 1956 to the first team of Dinamo Bacau , which at the time the highest Romanian league, the Divizia A , took. and came there on March 18, 1956 for its first use.

After Dinamo Bacau was relegated at the end of the season , Popa moved to Dinamo Bucharest , one of the most successful Romanian clubs. At Dinamo he developed into a regular player and, with a few exceptions, always played in the top group of Divizia A. In 1962 , 1963 , 1964 and 1965 he was able to win the championship four times in a row and the Romanian Cup in 1959 , 1964 and 1968 .

After twelve years at Dinamo, Popa was given the opportunity to move abroad in 1969 and joined top Turkish club Beşiktaş Istanbul . There the season did not go as expected and only ninth place jumped out. Subsequently, Popa ended his active career.

National team

Cornel Popa played a total of 37 games for the Romanian national football team between 1958 and 1967 , but remained without a goal. He made his debut on October 26, 1958 in a friendly against Hungary . Although he was one of the team's regulars before and after the tournament, he was not included in the roster for the 1964 Olympics . Popa made his last international appearance on May 24, 1967, when he lost 7-1 to Switzerland in qualifying for the 1968 European Championship .

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Popa first worked as a youth coach at his former club Dinamo Bucharest . Later he was head coach at the lower-class clubs Unirea Alexandria , Victoria Roman and Minerul Gura Humorului , but without being able to achieve significant success.
