Cornel Züger (born August 7, 1981 in Wangen ) is a former Swiss ski racer . He specialized in the fast downhill and Super-G disciplines, won a European Cup race and was once among the top 20 in the World Cup .
biography
Züger was accepted into the Swiss Ski Association 's C-team in 2003 and was promoted to the B-team a year later. He contested his first FIS race in December 1996, but mostly only achieved results in the midfield. Therefore, it took a relatively long time until he had his first start in the European Cup in January 2002 . There, too, the results were initially rather modest and it took him another year to win his first European Cup points. In January 2004 he came in eighth place in the downhill from Tarvisio in the top ten for the first time. In the 2004/05 season he already reached the top 10 in four downhill runs and was sixth in the final classification in the downhill classification. In the 2005/06 season he was in the top ten five times and finished ninth in the Super-G classification; in 2006/07 he was seventh in the Super-G classification with four top 10 places. On December 12, 2007, he took second place in the downhill from Altenmarkt-Zauchensee for the first time on the podium.
Züger had his first start in the World Cup on December 20, 2003 in the downhill from Val Gardena. The next outings followed in February 2005 and on March 5, 2005 he got his first World Cup points with rank 28 in the downhill from Kvitfjell . For the time being, this remained his best result, it wasn't until the 2007/08 season that he was able to place himself in the top 30 several times. The best result of the season was 22nd place in the downhill from Kvitfjell on February 29th. On December 6, 2008, the Swiss suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in a fall in the Super-G at Beaver Creek and had to end the 2008/09 season very early.
In the winter of 2009/10, Züger won the European Cup with a victory in the downhill from Sarntal / Reinswald and another two podium places. He also made it onto the podium once in the Super-G. His only World Cup points this winter came in 25th in the downhill from Bormio . On January 29, 2011, Züger achieved his best World Cup result with 18th place in the Downhill from Chamonix . In another two World Cup races he was among the fastest 30 in the 2010/2011 season , but mostly he did not achieve a place in the points. Since he clearly missed his goal of qualifying for the World Cup finals , he retired from ski racing in March 2011.
