Cornelius Lonzo Burdette (born November 6, 1878 in Sandstone , † April 30, 1955 in Charleston ) was an American sports marksman .

successes

Cornelius Burdette took part in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm in four disciplines. In the three-position battle with the army rifle, he did not get beyond the 52nd place, in the competition over 600 m in any position he was eighth. He finished the individual competition with the free rifle in the three-position fight in 21st place. He finally secured a gold medal in the team competition with the army rifle. The US team, which in addition to Burdette also included Harry Adams , John Jackson , Allan Briggs , Carl Osburn and Warren Sprout , finished the competition with 1,687 points ahead of the British and Swedish teams and thus became Olympic champions . Burdette was the team's best shooter with 288 points.

Burdette was a member of the West Virginia National Guard at the time of the Olympics . In 1937 he retired as a major from active service in the US Army . In 1953 he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal .
