Cornelius Krahn

Cornelius Krahn (born August 3, 1902 in Rosental , Ukraine ; † August 3, 1990 in Bethel , Kansas , USA ) was a German-Ukrainian theologian , professor of church history , author and editor of standard works on the history of the Mennonites .

Life

Krahn came to live with his Mennonite parents of German origin, Kornelius Krahn and his wife Maria geb. Bum born in the Chortitza colony. At the age of 24 he left the Soviet Union and studied Protestant theology and history in Bonn , Berlin and Amsterdam . In 1936 he presented at the University of Heidelberg his dissertation in front of the life of Menno Simons and became a doctor of theology doctorate . He immigrated to the USA and studied languages ​​the following year at Bethel College in North Newton / Kansas and at the University of Wisconsin . From 1939 to 1944 he taught himself at Tabor College in Hillsboro (Kansas). As a member of the faculty of Bethel College, he taught church history, the history of Russia and Germany from 1944 to 1974 . He served as the director of the Bethel College Historical Library (Mennonite Library and Archives). From a small collection, beginning with Abraham Warkenthin , he developed this library with devotion into an extremely extensive library with Dutch , Prussian and Russian materials on the Mennonites. In 1946 he founded the quarterly Mennonite Life and was its editor for the next 25 years. In 1953 he received a Fulbright grant to do research in the Netherlands on religious life during the Reformation . His book " Dutch Anabaptism: Origin, Spread, Life, and Thought (1450-1600) " was published in 1968. Incidentally, Krahn was the author or editor of more than 18 books and articles and published articles in Mennonite periodicals and scientific journals. As a collaborator on a four-volume Mennonite encyclopedia (published between 1955 and 1959), he contributed 686 articles. In the late 1960s, with the assistance of Melvin Gingerich and Orlando Harms , he published a slightly revised reprint of the Mennonite Encyclopedia.

In the 1960s he became a member of the Christian Peace Conference and took part in its II All-Christian Peace Assembly , which took place in Prague in 1964 .

Krahn helped shape various historical projects, including the North American Committee for Documenting the Origins of Free Churches , which was formed in 1963. In addition to the historical committee of the general conference of the Mennonites, he also worked in their western district. After retiring from Bethel College in 1974, he traveled extensively, taught, and collected other materials related to Mennonite life and beliefs.

Cornelius Krahn was married to Hilda Wiebe from Beatrice (Nebraska) since 1940 and together with her the father of his children Mariane, Stanley, Karla and Cornelia.
