Cornelius Paulinus Swanenburg ; also: Cornelius Paulinus Swanenburgius, Cornelius Paulinus Leydensis; (* September 12, 1574 in Leiden ; † May 12, 1630 ibid) was a Dutch legal scholar.

Life

Swanenburg began studying law on May 2, 1591 at the University of Leiden . Especially Eberhard Bronchorst promoted him, under whom he defended the treatise de Legibus , SC et longa consuetudine in 1592 and on July 3, 1593 de Restitutione in integrum minorum . On September 6, 1595 he acquired the academic degree of a licentiate in law, continued his studies in Douai on September 9, 1597 and, after some minor difficulties, received his doctorate in 1597 in Leiden to the doctor of law. On November 9, 1597 he became associate professor of law in Leiden and, after the death of Cornelis de Groot on February 8, 1611, full professor of the institutes and pandects.

After he had already been on the nomination list for the office of Rector Magnificence of the Alma Mater in 1613 and 1622 , this office was transferred to him in 1615. Several times Swanenburg was delegated to the Senate of the States of Holland, where he represented the interests of the Leiden University. He left little behind in independent writings, rather his importance is likely to lie primarily in the practical teaching of the university. In this office he worked until the end of his life. His disciple Petrus Cunaeus gave his funeral sermon.

Swanenburg was married to Wilhelmina van Tetrode. From this marriage comes the son Paul, who became mayor of Leiden. Otto Schwanenburgius, who studied in Utrecht and Heidelberg, could also be his son. His portrait can be found in the Alm. Ac. L. (Almanac Acta Leydensis?).
