The doctor Dr. Royce Lee arrives with her servant Hyacinth on the Philippine island of Manoi to meet her fiancé Dr. To marry Jan Stockman. It is December 6, 1941. The wedding is performed the next morning by a local priest. As the ceremony ends, Japanese bombers fly over and bomb the island. Hyacinth dies, Stockman and his wife manage to get to a group of US soldiers unharmed. On their way to Manila , around 400 km away , the American soldiers were able to repel attacks by Japanese ground troops. Stockman is shot during one of the skirmishes. His wife can treat the wound. When the lieutenant fell ill with malaria , he committed suicide. He doesn't want to be a burden on his troops and slow them down.

Days later, the soldiers and their charges reach the rocky island of Corregidor . American troops have dug into the rocks there. Pinky, one of the soldiers who arrived, meets his girlfriend again, whom he calls Hey Dutch . Stockman and his wife take up work in the hospital. There Royce meets her ex-boyfriend Michael, who left her without explanation. Stockman believes his wife still loves Michael.

The Japanese keep attacking the island with their planes. The protection of the rocks is getting thinner. Soon after, people are shocked by the news that the Japanese have invaded Burma . The island's supplies are decreasing, but the commander does not want to give up the island. Dutch is injured in a Japanese attack. She and Pinky are getting married at the bedside. However, Dutch succumbs to her injuries. Royce swears her love to Jan, even if she realizes that she is still drawn to Michael.

The defenders are running out of ammunition. Pinky and the other soldiers get involved in hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese. When a bomb hits the hospital, Stockman is also killed. In the caves, Royce helps give birth to a baby. Michael brings her the news of her husband's death. Royce and the nurses are ordered to evacuate. Royce gets on the plane that she and the patients should fly out. She swears to Michael that she will meet him again after the war.

On the island, Michael has to operate the wounded without anesthesia due to lack of supplies. The radio operator brings one last message through. 55 minutes later, the remaining crew on the island surrendered. Back home in the States, Royce weeps for her dead friends.
