Costanza Bonadonna (born 1971 ) is an Italian volcanologist and full professor at the University of Geneva in the field of environmental sciences . In November 2019, she was one of 100 women from French-speaking Switzerland, Ticino and Franche-Comté who were portrayed in a book to serve as role models for girls.

Live and act

After attending high school in Pisa , Costanza Bonadonna first studied geology at the University of Pisa , where her father also taught. She received her doctorate ( PhD ) in volcanology at the University of Bristol in England. During the devastating eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano in the 1990s, she was on the island of Montserrat .

Since 2007, Bonadonna has been the director of the course for the assessment and management of geological and climate-related risks (CERG-C). In 2018 she was also appointed Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Geneva.

Her research focuses on the modeling of sediments from volcanic gases, the development of new methodologies for the characterization of deposits of crater ejection materials (so-called tephra or pyroclastic sediments ), and the development of probability calculations to assess the randomness of tephra deposits. She is also involved in various multidisciplinary projects related to the quantification of risks.

As Associate Editor, she publishes in the Bulletin of Volcanology, among others . From 2012 to 2019 Bonadonna was also a member of the Steering Committee of the Center for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action (CERAH).
