Council of State (Ghana)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Council of State (dt. Staatsrat) is the name for a constitutional body in the West African state of Ghana . The Constitution of Ghana from 1992 regulates in Chapter 9 the interests of the State Council in Ghana to date. The constitutional body of the State Council introduced the constitution of 1969 for the first time. Likewise, the 1979 Constitution provided the Council of State with the support of the President. Historically, the Council of State can be compared with a traditional advisory body such as the Council of Elders.

tasks

The State Council of Ghana has the task of advising the President of Ghana and supporting him in his decision-making. The Council of State can also advise ministers or parliament. There is no binding effect of the proposal of the State Council for the other constitutional organs. As a rule, the State Council is asked by the President for its opinion on a law or a political question. The Council of State can give its opinion on a question without having been contacted directly.

The State Council of the Fourth Republic of Ghana consists of 25 members, eleven of which are appointed by the President, ten are appointed as elected representatives from the respective regions and four represent former heads of certain institutions. The latter are a former Chief Justice , a former Chief of Staff of the Defense Staff, a former Police Inspector and a former President of the National Council of Chiefs.

The State Council has an advisory role and consists of four commissions: the Committee on Appointments and Petitions, the Committee on Finance and Social Welfare, the Committee on Development, Science and Technology, and the Committee on Legal and Public Affairs.
