Countryman - Lost in the Jungle is a 1982 music feature film that was shot in Jamaica and is set there. It was directed by Dickie Jobson , manager of Bob Marley & the Wailers from 1973 to 1975. The screenwriters are Dickie Jobson and Michael Thomas, the latter reporter for Rolling Stone music magazine . The leading roles are played by Countryman, Hiram Keller , Kristina St. Clair and Carl Bradshaw .

action

Countryman is a Jamaican fisherman whose simple, tranquil life was thrown off course by rescuing two Americans from the wreckage of a crashed small plane. Countryman becomes involved in the political intrigues of the dangerous Colonel Sinclair. Sinclair accuses the crash victims of smuggling weapons and drugs on behalf of the CIA and tries with all his might to arrest them in order to gain political advantage and win an upcoming election. Countryman's nature-loving way of life, its spirituality and precise knowledge of the environment offer the best prerequisites for hiding the two sought-after people in impassable terrain and for surviving the adventure together.

background

The protagonist Countryman is also called Countryman in real life. His actual baptismal name is Lothan. He is a member of the Rasta movement and lives with his relatives on a secluded part of the island of Jamaica, largely separated by a swampy landscape. The area can only be safely reached by boat. As in the film, he makes his living by fishing. He lives poor but happy, without shoes, only wearing swimming trunks and, as he himself says, leaves his body to the island's climate. His ideology includes humility, charity and a great closeness to nature in order to avoid conflicts of any kind.

The first meeting between screenwriter Dickie Jobson and Countryman took place around 1973. Film producer Chris Blackwell , founder of the record label Island Records , met Countryman through his friend Dickie Jobson. Impressed by Countryman's uniqueness, it was decided to make a film that was tailored to the real life of the main character.

Film music

The film is dedicated to the words and music of reggae musician Bob Marley , who died in 1981 . Accordingly, pieces by Bob Marley & the Wailers provide most of the score in Countryman. Other artists are: Wally Badarou , Rico Rodriguez , Steel Pulse , Aswad , Dennis Brown , Toots & The Maytals , Fabulous Five , Jah Lion , Human Cargo and Lee Perry .
