Craig is an American city ​​in Colorado . In 2010 this Home Rule Municipality had 9464 inhabitants. It is the most populous city in Moffat County and also its county seat .

history

At the confluence of Fortificaton Creek with the Yampa River , then known as the Bear River, there were attempts to found a settlement even before Craig was founded. In 1878, Windsor included several ranches, the Peck's store trading post and the crossing over the Yampa River called Himley's Ford . The Yampa branch was established in 1885.

Craig was founded in 1889 by William H. Tucker and named after Rev. William Bayard Craig, one of the financial backers of the city's founding. On April 24, 1908, the elevation to the city took place. Craig became the county seat of Moffat County when it was formed on February 27, 1911 from the western part of Routt County .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Craig lived in 9,189 people. The population density was 728.5 people per km ². There were 3851 housing units at an average of 305.3 per km ². The Craigs population was 92.56% White , 0.30% Black or African American , 0.96% Native American , 0.42% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 3.84% said other races belong to and 1.89% named two or more races. 10.8% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Craig were distributed to 3525 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18. 54.3% of the households are married, 9.6% had a female head of the household without a husband and 31.0% did not form families. 25.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.9% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.05.

The urban population was divided into 28.5% minors, 9.6% 18–24 year olds, 30.1% 25–44 year olds, 21.9% 45–64 year olds and 9.9% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 106.3 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 103.4 men.

The median household income in Craig was 41,091 US dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 45,504 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 38,038 compared to $ 21,806 for women. The per capita income in Craig was $ 18,140. 8.6% of the population and 6.9% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 10.5% of minors and 6.5% of those aged 65 and over.
