Craig Smith (born August 2, 1976 in Mansfield ) is a retired English football player .

Career

Smith was a member of Derby County from 1993 as part of a Youth Training Scheme and signed his first professional contract in August 1995. For appearances in the first team of the 1996 promoted to the Premier League club it was not enough for Smith in the following years and in August 1997 the striker was loaned to the fourth division AFC Rochdale for a month . There he started as a left full-back and three short appearances as a substitute, but left no lasting impression. In February 1998, a loan from the fifth division Rushden & Diamonds followed , in the following weeks he played two part appearances in the league and at the end of the season, his expiring contract was not extended by Derby County.

As a result, he first played at Burton Albion in the Southern League before he played briefly for Hinckley United from March 2000 after he was sorted out by Nigel Clough at Burton. For the 2000/01 season he joined the Northern Premier League playing club Belper Town . In early 2001 he returned to Hinckley on loan and was finally signed by Hinckley United in March 2001 for £ 2000, a record transfer for Belper Town. Smith rose at the end of the season with the club as champions of the Western Division in the Premier Division of the Southern League, but missed most of the games due to a back injury. In 2001 and 2002 the club managed to win the Leicestershire Challenge Cup , and in 2003 the Rolleston Charity Cup was won. In the two main round games in the 2001/02 FA Cup against Gray's Athletic and Cheltenham Town , however, he was not part of the squad. The last time Smith, who was a defender at Hinckley, was part of the Hinckley United squad in the 2002/03 season.
