    Election result

On July 28, 2017, the Pakistani Supreme Court dismissed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from his post and barred him from further public office. As a result, a new electoral law was passed in 2017, which would have enabled Sharif to continue to act as party leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (German Muslim League , PML-N) despite the ruling .

However, in a later ruling by the Supreme Court on February 21, 2018, Sharif was also expelled from the office of party chairman. In that judgment, all decisions Sharif had made during his tenure as party chairman were invalidated, including the declarations of candidacies for the Senate, which he himself had signed. To avoid delays in the Senate elections, Pakistan's electoral commission had declared all PML-N candidates to be independents.

A total of 52 seats were filled in this election. Of these, 33 were general seats (7 from each province, 4 from the tribal areas under federal administration (FATA) and 1 from Islamabad ), 9 seats for technocrats (2 from each province and 1 from Islamabad), 8 seats for women (2 each from each Province) and 2 minority seats (1 each from 2 provinces).

A total of 131 candidates applied for the 52 seats. Of these, 33 were from Sindh Province , 26 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa , 24 from FATA, 23 from Balochistan , 20 from Punjab and 5 from Islamabad.
