Parliamentary elections in Pakistan 1990

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Pakistan in 1990 took place on October 24, 1990. The 217 members of the National Assembly were elected. The turnout was 45.5%

background

The party of Benazir Bhutto , the Pakistan People's Party won at the parliamentary elections in 1988 the most seats in parliament. However, in 1990 there was dissatisfaction due to the lack of law. The PPP was also accused of corruption. The PPP could not fulfill the election promises made in 1988. The President of Pakistan, Ghulam Ishaq Khan , dissolved the parliament and government of Benazir Bhutto on August 6, 1990 on various allegations. Bhutto described the allegations as politically motivated. The replacement of Bhutto was preceded by unrest in Sindh and differences with the army over domestic and foreign policy. The Islamic movement, chaired by Nawaz Sharif , which was the only party to run against Bhutto and her party in the elections, used the allegations against the PPP to campaign.

Parties

The PPP took part in the elections by joining the party alliance, Pakistan Democratic Alliance.

Election campaign

Bhutto and the PDA were reportedly in a good position at the start of the campaign. The transitional government failed to prove any allegations against Bhutto.

At the end of the election campaign, Bhutto mobilized 100,000 supporters in a campaign rally in Lahore . Sharif had about 10,000 supporters in Lahore at his campaign rally. A total of 1334 candidates took part in the elections. 21,163,911 valid votes were cast.

Election manipulation

The Pakistani Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that the 1990 elections had been rigged by the army and the secret service. The president and the army chief have financially supported favored parties. The motive was the weakening of the PPP.

Result

The Pakistan People's Party lost the elections together with the party alliance PDA. The Islami Jamhoori Ittehad from Sharif won the popular vote by 113,000 votes. The success of the Popular Vote resulted in the IJI getting 106 seats in parliament while the PPP only got 44 seats. The reason for this development was that the PPP's share of the vote was distributed. The IJI's share of the vote was more concentrated. Nawaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan after his election victory.
