Vegetative characteristics

Crenidium spinescens is an intertwined, branched shrub that can reach a height of 1.7 m. The branches are leafless except for the young shoots, the twigs are prickly and tomentose with hairy trichomes . The narrowly elliptical to linear foliage leaves are sessile, 3 to 10 mm long and 0.5 to 1.5 mm wide. The entire margin of the sheet is slightly rolled up.

Inflorescences and flowers

The hermaphrodite flowers are in zymose inflorescences in the nodes . The small chalice is 1.3 to 2 mm long and has five fine tips. The crown is 2.5 to 4 mm long, narrowly tubular and provided with five ovate to broadly ovate, short and wide corolla lobes. These are just as long or longer than the corolla tube. During the flowering phase, the sexual parts of the flower protrude far beyond the crown. Four or five stamens are formed in two different shapes, if five are present, the fifth is usually sterile. The anthers consist of only one theka 0.8 mm long.

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are egg-shaped capsules from 4 to 4.5 mm in length, they open with crevices in the partition wall. The two subjects are each divided into two parts. Two to four seeds are formed per fruit , they are about 3.5 mm long.

Other specifications

The base chromosome number is . Hyoscyamine was found to be the main alkaloid in the plants, and the leaves also contain anabasine .

Occurrence

The species is endemic to the offshore region of southwest Australia , where it grows in deep sand on the edge of salt lakes.
