Critical Mess is a Lower Saxony death metal band from Hanover , which was founded in 2012.
history
The band was formed in February 2012. After the line-up had changed several times in the following years, it solidified in 2016. The group now consisted of bassist Christian “Lommer” Wiesener, drummer Benjamin “Benny” Komatitsch, guitarist Marco “Elmo” Evers and Marco Schauff and the singer Britta Görtz. Then the name Critical Mess was chosen. In March 2018, the debut album Human Præy was released via Metalville . A guitar solo by Jeff Waters can be heard on the album . The band played with Six Feet Under in May and June and with Sinsaenum and Hatesphere in Europe in September and October . In June 2019, the second album followed under the name Man Made Machine Made Man . In July of that year the band could be seen at the Metal Days in Slovenia and in August at the Wacken Open Air .

In an interview with Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard , Christian “Lommer” Wiesener and Britta Görtz stated that the album title Human Præy was a mixture of the English words “prey” (booty) and “pray” (pray). Religion is a purely human phenomenon, while the prey aspect puts humans on the animal level. The song Pansperm is about the fact that earthly life comes from space and is inspired by the film Prometheus - Dark Signs . Patrick Schmidt had reviewed the album three editions earlier and classified it as Death Metal, which is primarily defined by its brutality. The songs are vehement, but there is no looseness. The song material is uniform and leaves little room for development. The singer Görtz uses guttural singing , but can hardly compete with the "sound wall" of the other instruments. Schiffmann wrote in his review of Man Made Machine Made Man on musikreviews.de that the band was "as brash and unadapted as it has been since the beginning of their career" and summarized the music as modern death metal. However, the band is a bit more spectacular than before, as one is getting closer to grindcore in the style of napalm death . Occasionally similarities to Bolt Thrower can be heard and there are sometimes slight influences from Thrash Metal .
