Croatan National Forest

The Croatan National Forest is a forest area protected by the United States of America on the Atlantic coast of the state of North Carolina . It is administered by the United States Forest Service , a division of the US Department of Agriculture . The national forest is jointly managed with the three other protected forests in North Carolina, the Nantahala , Pisgah and Uwharrie National Forest , and the administrative headquarters are in Asheville . The ranger station responsible for Croatan has its office in New Bern .

The name of the park comes from the Algonquin language and roughly means city ​​of deliberations or city ​​of council . The park is in the districts of Craven , Carteret and Jones Counties .

The forest extends on the coast over an area of ​​almost 650 square kilometers. It is bounded by the Neuse River , the Bogue Sound and the White Oak River . The Croatan Forest is characterized by pine forests , salt marshes , swamps and Atlantic marshland ( pocosins ). The forest offers hiking opportunities, campsites, hunting grounds, mountain bike trails and off-road vehicle tours. The surrounding rivers, lakes and streams offer opportunities for swimmers, anglers and canoeists . The forest is near the cities of New Bern and Morehead City and surrounds Marine Corp Air Station Cherry Point .

There are a number of hiking trails within the Croatan Forest, for example the Neusiok Trail , which leads over a distance of 34 kilometers through swamps and pine forests. Other routes, such as the Cedar Point Tideland Trail crosses the salt marshes and runs along the White Oak River, the Island Forest Creek Walk themed a forest of hardwoods, and the Black Swamp OHV Trail is suitable for bikes and off-road vehicles.

Flora and fauna

The Croatan National Forest is inhabited by many animals on land and in the water, such as deer, poisonous snakes, black bears , turkeys , hawks and alligators . The forest consists mainly of pines, which alternate with hardwoods in some places, for example bald cypress trees in the swamps. Carnivorous plants such as the Venus flytrap or the sundew can also be found in the forest.
