The Neuse River is a river that has its source in the Piedmont of the state of North Carolina in the United States of America and flows south of New Bern into the Pamlico Sound . Its length is about 440 kilometers, the catchment area covers 14 582 square kilometers and is completely within the state borders.

Neuse River is formed by the confluence of the Flat River and Eno River before the dam Falls Lake in northern Wake County runs through. The fall line of the Piedmont with its shallows lies below the surface of the Falls Lake. The Neuse River ranks eighth on America's list of threatened rivers.

geography

As a typical river of the North Carolina coastal plain, the Neuse River flows through a basin of interrupted marshy river plains on its way to the mouth . The only exception are the Cliffs of Neuse near the village of Goldsboro , here the river cuts a 30 meter narrow gorge through cliffs made of limestone and sandstone . This is also where the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is located . The river is subject to extreme fluctuations in the flow rate , on the one hand it often overflows its banks in wet periods, on the other hand it shrinks to the size of a brook that can be crossed on foot in dry periods.

The Neuse River flows through shares of seven counties, major cities and places near the river are Durham , Neuse Township , the capital of the state of Raleigh , Smithfield , Goldsboro , Kinston and New Bern.

One of the major tributaries is Crabtree Creek in Wake County .

history

The banks of the Neuse River have been settled for a very long time, many artifacts from the history of the Indians of North America and their settlement of the banks were found on the Neuse River. In 1865 one of the first armored warships built by the Confederate Navy , the Neuse Ram , was seized by Union soldiers , set on fire and sunk in the Neuse River. The wreck was discovered in historic deep water, lifted in 1963 and erected next to the river at the Governor Caswell Memorial in Kinston.

Water quality

The river causes ecological and health problems again and again due to wastewater discharge from cities and agriculture, storm effects and other polluting causes. After the two hurricanes Fran and Floyd in the 1990s, the exposure was extremely high.

The Pfiesteria piscicida alga is widespread in the river and its population depends on the nutrient content of the water. This alga has been linked to fish deaths and negative health effects on humans.
