features

Inside and outside of the flower

The Corsican crocus is a bald, perennial plant that reaches heights of 4 to 8 centimeters. At the top, the tuberous casing is fibrous. There is no stem . Leaves and flowers arise from an underground tuber. The tuber has a longitudinally fibrous casing, which is net-fibrous towards the tip. The leaves sprout together with the flowers. There are 3 to 6 sheets at a time. These are often bent back, linear, green and have a width of 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters. When they bloom, they are usually barely longer than the flowers.

There is usually one, more rarely there are two flowers. The throat is bald and white to purple. The perigone measure 20 to 35 (rarely from 18) × 7 to 13 millimeters. Inside they are bright purple to deep purple, outside often yellowish with fine side veins and 1 to 3 purple stripes. The anthers are orange and twice as long as the stamens. The capsule fruit contains pale brown seeds. The flowering period extends from February to April.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 or 22.

The Corsican crocus is similar to the smallest crocus . The smallest crocus is somewhat more slender and has more piebald outer tepals .

Occurrence

The Corsican crocus occurs in northern and central Corsica and Sardinia in bushes, stony pastures and in the mountains.
