Crownsville is a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County , Maryland , United States and is located approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Washington, DC and approximately 30 kilometers south of Baltimore . The place has almost 2,000 inhabitants.

An anecdote about Crownsville says that this location was chosen by screenwriter Jeff Arch as the original location for the film Sleepless in Seattle , the main character of which works for a newspaper in nearby Baltimore . Due to the feared poor marketability of the place name, however, the title-defining Seattle was ultimately preferred to it.
